Understand Why Things Worked

By: Kate Manheaven

I’ve talked to people before who were really nervous about the presentation they were about to give. They had made sure that everything was together, but they told me it just didn’t feel quite right. They just knew the people there weren’t really going to like it, and that everything would turn out badly.

Well, in the end the exact opposite was true. They walked away shaking their head with a smile at how great everything was. When asked why it was a success, they didn’t have the slightest idea. “Just got lucky, I guess,” they said in reference to the crowd there.

Yes, it is possible to just get a lucky crowd, but is this really going to be part of your planning? Are you just going to hope you get a friendly crowd?

Of course not, and I think that very few presentations are successful because of luck. The ones that really work are the ones that do so because the person giving them knew what they were doing.

And here’s the question to ask, and what my friend needed to consider: was it just luck, or did they do something just right? If the latter is true, than can they reproduce that success with another presentation? If you can answer that question then you’re on the path towards future great presentations.

After a presentation is over try to pinpoint what it was that people liked. Did you get pocket folder printing done and they just loved the folder you picked? Did they like the design of it, the way the material worked together? Was it the topic of your speech or the way you presented your topic?

Before your presentation is done takes steps to be sure that you will be able to find out what people enjoyed. Here’s an idea: when you get your presentation folder printing done insert a small piece of paper in each folder asking people to rate what they liked and what they didn’t, and then have them either hand them to you after the presentation or mail them to you.

It doesn’t take much to do something like this and you can be certain that you’ll end up with some good advice on how to make things better, or some good reasons as to why you were good at what you did.

Knowing why something worked is certainly the most important step towards repeating your success. Why sit back and marvel at the good job without really knowing why when you can start yourself on the right kind of path towards making every presentation you do go well.

You need to be sure that each success helps make sure every other presentation is success also. Everything you need to know is already there, you just have to start asking people about it.
