Getting Specific: A Folder for Each Occasion

By: Andrew Michaels

When someone is giving a specific presentation, a big presentation, they usually walk around the room ahead of time and hand out information to people. This is typically a packet of various details that cover what they’ll be going over and helps the audience follow along, as well as giving them something to take home afterwards to remember what was talked about.

Often, if the person doing the presentation planned ahead, these will be in folders. The folders will have the name of the company along with their logo across the front of it. The folders will certainly have a nice design on them and be high quality so it acts as a good means of making sure that the company name gets taken home with each person at the presentation.

All of this is good, however, what I have noticed is a trend. See, I go to quite a few of these presentations over the years, and often will go to one being hosted by people from the same company as a different presentation I had only recently gone to. What I picked up on was that the presentation folder printing they were getting done was obviously the same each time.

These were considerably different topics that they were covering for their presentation, but the folders they handed them to me in were exactly the same. I know what happened, obviously. The company got a single large batch of presentation folder printing done and each person is just pulling a bunch of folders from that collection.

Here’s the thing though: you have a good opportunity here to make a bigger impression if you give people something a little more unique. Why not have a folder that not only shows your company name, but also has something specific for that presentation.

The reason why I say this is because I’ve often kept the information given to me, and kept all of those folders. Well, I reach the point of having three or four folders that look exactly the same, but have much different information in them. When a person makes a unique folder for that specific presentation then I can easily recognize where it came from without having to sort through the contents.

Presentation folder printing as a whole isn’t all that expensive, which has always been one of the plusses of it, and if you’re using folders at all, then you’ve made the right first step. I would just suggest that you go a little further to make a new folder each time you have another major presentation. Keep the more generic ones around, certainly, because you never know when you’re going to need a good folder, but get more creative with your presentation folders.

The small things like this have a way of making a big impression on people. I know it will take a little extra time, so if you’re already stressed enough from the presentation, you obviously need manage your time in the right way to get everything done. Still, at least give it a thought. You never know what kind of difference it will make.
